Temple of Peace and Health, Cardiff

This Spring, the Temple of Peace and Health in Cardiff is opening its doors for a series of free events exploring its 80-year history. Designed by former RIBA President Percy Thomas and opened in 1938, this beautiful building retains many of its original furnishings.

Archive Workshop: 11am-1pm
This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the uncatalogued – and largely untouched – archives of the Temple of Peace and Health, all in the beautiful surroundings of the Council Chamber and Library. Highlights include materials relating to the Temple’s early years; the history of children and young people’s engagement with peace organisations; and the history of institutions operating from the Temple.
Lunchtime Tour: 1-2pm
Take time over your lunch break to enjoy a tour of the Temple, including its stunning Art Deco Marble Hall, wood-panelled Council Chamber, and Remembrance Crypt, home of the Welsh Book of Remembrance.
Explore Your Civic Centre 2-4pm
Mari Lowe and Carrie Westwater have been exploring what people today think about the Civic Centre, home of the Temple of Peace and other historic buildings. The workshop will be a sharing session to find out what information they’ve gathered. Also at the workshop we will work together to produce a creative presentation based on the research. The workshop will include using creative materials, movement and performance. No experience needed! Supported by the Cultural Participation Research Network.
After Hours Tour: 6-8pm
Join us for an after-hours tour of this beautiful 1930s building – replete with original features down to its wooden hat stands – interspersed with tales about its history, readings inspired by the Temple’s original Order of Service, and drinks in the Marble Hall. The tour will feature a poetry reading by acclaimed Welsh poet Emily Blewitt: find out more about Emily and her work here.
All activities are free but with limited spaces available. If you are no longer able to attend, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can make your ticket available to someone else.
